April 2, 2024Podcasts have become a powerful tool for brands to engage with their audience on a deeper level. With their surge in popularity, launching a branded podcast offers a unique opportunity for businesses to connect with and market to listeners.
However, popularity is a two-sided coin. Just as there are more listeners than ever, there are also more podcasts. To stand out in the crowded podcasting space, it's essential to have a well-defined content strategy.
In this guide, we'll explore the key steps to creating a branded podcast content strategy that will help you create a show that people want to listen to.
Define Your Purpose and Goals
Before diving into creating a branded podcast, you first need to decide why you want to create one. Ask yourself questions like:
- What do I hope to achieve with this podcast?
- How can this podcast make my listeners’ lives better?
- What actions do I want my listeners to take?
Taking the time to answer these questions and really reflecting on the “why” of your podcast will help you narrow down your focus and give you a clear purpose, which will help in creating your branded podcast content strategy.
Once you have narrowed down your purpose, consider what your overall goals are. Maybe you want to generate more leads, increase your brand awareness, or simply build trust. Whatever your goals are, make sure you spend time making them as specific as possible. In fact, these goals should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (or SMART for short).
For example, if you’re looking to generate more leads with your podcast, a SMART goal might be “We will gain 10 new client inquiries during the three months after the podcast releases.” This gives you a direction and an outcome you are working towards which will help guide your podcast.
These goals are also a great way to measure the success of your podcast as time goes on. Once you’ve reached a goal, be sure to create new ones to continue and drive the growth of your branded podcast so that it remains a valuable tool.
Understand Your Audience
As with any content marketing strategy, the key to a successful branded podcast is understanding your audience.
When you are deciding what direction your podcast should go, take the time to consider your audience and what they may be most interested in. Research who they are, what their interests, challenges, and pain points may be, and what type of content they are already consuming.
While this may seem like a lot of information to gather, you likely already have some of it. Take a look at the data and analytics from your website, social media accounts, and other marketing campaigns. This will give you a good start at understanding your audience. And if you want more specific information, don’t be afraid to ask them! Set up a survey and send it to your email list or share it on social media.
By gaining insights into your audience's preferences and behaviors, you can tailor your podcast content to meet their needs effectively. After all, you can’t have a successful podcast if no one is listening.
Choose a Format and Tone
Next, you’ll need to decide on a format and tone for your podcast. Today, there are quite a few different styles of shows: co-hosted, live show, interview, narrative, etc. Not every style will work with every podcast, so it’s important to do some research on these different formats and take the time to consider which style matches your brand, podcast purpose and goals, and audience.
Likewise, not every tone is best suited for your show. This again depends on what your goals are and how you want your audience to receive you. For example, if you’re wanting to place yourself as an authority figure in your field, maybe you want to go with a more educational and professional tone. Similarly, if your goal is to increase brand awareness and be seen as relatable, maybe creating an entertaining and comical style podcast will be better.
Regardless of what tone or format you land on, you need to stick with it. Don’t have one super serious episode followed by a comedy sketch episode. Consistency in tone and format will help establish your podcast's identity and build a loyal listener base.
Plan Topics and Content
At this point, you should have a pretty good idea of what your show’s focus is, who you want to listen to it, and how you want to create and present your podcast. Now it’s time to plan out the topics and content you want to discuss on your show.
While you don’t need to draft every single episode at the beginning, you do need to have a general idea of what topics you would like to cover. These should all relate back to your purpose and what your audience wants to hear.
Brainstorm a list of relevant themes, subjects, and potential guests that align with your brand and audience interests. You can also use tools such as keyword research or even word association to create new and interesting ideas that still fall within your purpose and brand. Keep your content valuable, informative, and engaging to keep listeners coming back for more.
Additionally, consider incorporating storytelling elements to make your episodes compelling and memorable. Branded podcasting is a unique marketing strategy in that it allows you to integrate your business’s story more effectively and creatively than traditional marketing tactics. Use that to your advantage and leverage your brand story.
As time goes on, take a look at what episodes did well and what ones flopped. This will help you see which topics or even formats your audience finds most compelling.
Creating a winning branded podcast content strategy requires careful consideration of a variety of different elements. But if you dedicate time to the planning process, you can create a podcast that not only resonates with your audience but also achieves your brand objectives!
